Does the Frequency of Pedagogical Agent Intervention Relate to Learners' Self-Reported Boredom while using Multiagent Intelligent Tutoring Systems?

چکیده
Pedagogical agents (PAs) have the ability to scaffold and regulate students’ learning about complex topics while using intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs). Research on ITSs predominantly focuses on the impact that these systems have on overall learning, while the specific components of humanITS interaction, such as student-PA dialogue within the system, are given little attention. One hundred undergraduate students interacted with MetaTutor, a multiagent hypermedia ITS, to learn about the human circulatory system. Data from these interactions were drawn from questionnaires and logfiles to determine the extent to which a specific agent from MetaTutor, Sam the Strategizer, impacted students’ overall emotions while using the system. Results indicated that Sam negatively impacted students’ experiences of enjoyment, in relation to the other agents of MetaTutor, and the frequency of Sam’s interactions with students significantly predicted their reports of boredom while using the system. Implications for the design of affect-sensitive multiagent ITSs are discussed.

Building a Social Conversational Pedagogical Agent – Design Challenges and Methodological approaches
This chapter discusses design challenges encountered when developing a conversational pedagogical agent. By tracing the historical roots of pedagogical agents in Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS), we discern central developments in creating an agent that is both knowledgeable and fosters a social relationship with the learner. Main challenges faced when attempting to develop a pedagogical agen...
متن کاملDiagnosing Self-efficacy in Intelligent Tutoring Systems: An Empirical Study
Self-efficacy is an individual’s belief about her ability to perform well in a given situation. Because self-efficacious students are effective learners, endowing intelligent tutoring systems with the ability to diagnose selfefficacy could lead to improved pedagogy. Self-efficacy is influenced by (and influences) affective state. Thus, physiological data might be used to predict a students’ lev...
متن کاملAgent-Based Distributed Intelligent Tutoring System Using Case-Based Reasoning
Intelligent Tutoring Systems have proven their worth in multiple ways and in multiple domains in education. In this chapter, the proposed Agent-Based Distributed ITS using CBR for enhancing the intelligent learning environment is introduced. The general architecture of the ABDITS is formed by the three components that generally characterize an ITS: the Student Model, the Domain Model, and the P...
متن کاملPedagogical Agents in Virtual Learning Environments
Advances in visualization and networking technologies make it possible to construct virtual learning environments, i.e., virtual worlds in which learners can immerse themselves. This paper examines issues involved in the design of computer-generated virtual agents with which learners may interact in such environments. Functions common to intelligent tutoring systems, such as student modeling an...
متن کاملText-Based Affect Detection in Intelligent Tutors
Affect-sensitive Intelligent Tutoring Systems are an exciting new educational technology that aspire to heighten motivation and enhance learning gains in interventions that are dynamically adaptive to learners’ affective and cognitive states. Although state of the art affect detection systems rely on behavioral and physiological measures for affect detection, we show that a textual analysis of ...
